A Curved Couch Actually Saves Space in Your Living Room

Nothing makes a space feel more warm and welcoming than round furniture, and we’ve got our eye on curved sofas. They’re not exactly trendy, as they have been pretty popular since German designer Vladimir Kagan released his now-iconic Serpentine sofa in 1950, but they’re not really timeless either. Curved couches are somewhere in the middle, making them the perfect cool piece that will get plenty of attention without being too eye-catching. Those pieces—the ones that are so aggressively begging for eyeballs—you’ll eventually get sick of and need to replace.

Ahead, we picked a few of our favorites that give your living space a focal point without overpowering the room. From a pale blue velvet find with an asymmetrical back to a 172-inch wide alternative with room for at least seven, there are a lot of options to consider. Of course, we also had to include the original curved sofa, the Serpentine. Yes, it's expensive, but it's a piece of design history, so it's worth it, if you ask us.

We chatted with Brady Burke, Creative and Design Manager at Havenly, for some much-appreciated expertise on the subject, and we were not disappointed with his tips.

"Definitely not," Burke exclaims. "Curved sofas don't necessarily need more space than a traditional sofa. They just utilize the space differently. While they may sit closer into the room than a rectangular sofa because of the curve, they shouldn't take up much more square footage overall," That said, "Certain balanced floor plans may feel a little tight with a curved sofa but this simply presents an opportunity for a more creative furniture and layout plan," he adds.

"They may be less practical in smaller spaces such as apartments because they will eat into the space in front of the sofa, but from a functional standpoint they should always provide the same amount of seating as a traditional sofa," Burke notes. At the end of the day, if your space allows for it, a curved sofa will actually save a bit of room in your living area because you can fit more people on board.

"If the silhouette is more traditional in that the middle of the sofa is highest and each side sits a bit lower, I may consider a few small pillows on each side," Burke explains. "If the sofa has an asymmetric back where one side is higher, I would suggest styling the high side with pillows and then tossing a simple throw blanket over the lower side to ensure you don't cover or distract from the beauty of the curve."

There's something about a curved sofa with no legs that really does something to us. One word of advice: You may want to avoid sitting where the two sofa pieces come together, as they tend to separate with too much weight.
