A Curved Couch Actually Saves Space in Your Living Room

Nothing makes a space feel more warm and welcoming than round furniture, and we’ve got our eye on curved sofas. They’re not exactly trendy, as they have been pretty popular since German designer Vladimir Kagan released his now-iconic Serpentine sofa in 1950, but they’re not really timeless either. Curved couches are somewhere in the middle, making them the perfect cool piece that will get plenty of attention without being too eye-catching. Those pieces—the ones that are so aggressively begging for eyeballs—you’ll eventually get sick of and need to replace.

Ahead, we picked a few of our favorites that give your living space a focal point without overpowering the room. From a pale blue velvet find with an asymmetrical back to a 172-inch wide alternative with room for at least seven, there are a lot of options to consider. Of course, we also had to include the original curved sofa, the Serpentine. Yes, it's expensive, but it's a piece of design history, so it's worth it, if you ask us.

We chatted with Brady Burke, Creative and Design Manager at Havenly, for some much-appreciated expertise on the subject, and we were not disappointed with his tips.

"Definitely not," Burke exclaims. "Curved sofas don't necessarily need more space than a traditional sofa. They just utilize the space differently. While they may sit closer into the room than a rectangular sofa because of the curve, they shouldn't take up much more square footage overall," That said, "Certain balanced floor plans may feel a little tight with a curved sofa but this simply presents an opportunity for a more creative furniture and layout plan," he adds.

"They may be less practical in smaller spaces such as apartments because they will eat into the space in front of the sofa, but from a functional standpoint they should always provide the same amount of seating as a traditional sofa," Burke notes. At the end of the day, if your space allows for it, a curved sofa will actually save a bit of room in your living area because you can fit more people on board.

"If the silhouette is more traditional in that the middle of the sofa is highest and each side sits a bit lower, I may consider a few small pillows on each side," Burke explains. "If the sofa has an asymmetric back where one side is higher, I would suggest styling the high side with pillows and then tossing a simple throw blanket over the lower side to ensure you don't cover or distract from the beauty of the curve."

Safavieh is best known for its hand-woven Moroccan-inspired area rugs, but the brand, which has its own Amazon storefront, boasts a bevy of beautiful furniture. Case in point: this elegantly curved couch, which is covered in pale blue velvet. (It also comes in a pink so pale it almost looks white.) The sofa is balanced atop a set of stainless steel legs, so you know this thing is built to last. And because it's on Amazon, you can order it today and receive it within two business days.

There's something about a curved sofa with no legs that really does something to us. This one, which sold out in white, is filled with dense foam padding and a spring coil system so that you can lounge on it pretty much all day without feeling uncomfortable. One word of advice: You may want to avoid sitting where the two sofa pieces come together, as they tend to separate with too much weight.

Is it just us or does this midcenutry-inspired sofa look like a giant bouclé-upholstered pillow? Perhaps it's the sponge-filled seat and back cushions, but regardless, we're into it. Without more context, it may look a bit small, but it's actually nearly 100 inches wide, so it can comfortably seat at least four people.

The luxury sofa itself may not be very round, but the back wraps around the edges to create a hug-like shape that counts as a curve. And with a high-resiliency polyurethane foam core, it's just as cozy as it looks. Normally, you can score just about any West Elm sofa in the brand's massive collection of fabrics, but this one is available in only the white bouclé shown, so buyer beware: it may get a bit dirty if you like to take a seat immediately after getting home.

We don't like to play favorites, but if we had to pick one bouclé sofa that really speaks to us, it would be Maiden Home's famous Chelsea couch. You may not really be able to see them, but the curved, solid wood legs echo the fluid lines of the sofa and offer some extra support, making them the hero of this design. If white isn't your thing, be sure to order a few of the brand's complimentary fabric swatches. There's everything from merino to performance velvet.

Consider this our PSA that curved couches work just as well outside as they do inside like this Pottery Barn find, appropriately dubbed the Hampton. Though you may want to cover the cushions in inclement weather, the all-weather wicker frame can handle pretty much anything because it's made of all-weather wicker wrapped around an aluminum frame. If, for some reason, the Sunbrella-covered cushions do get a bit dirty, simply unzip them, take them off, and toss them in the wash.

Bold patterns are rarely something people feel neutral about. In other words, you either love them or hate them. If you fall into the former category, consider adding this cozy curved sofa with a gentle floral jacquard fabric to your living space. The one-seat cushion, which is filled with foam and fiber, is removable, making cleaning super easy. The legs are also removable, which may not seem like a plus, but if you've ever had to move furniture through a narrow doorway, you can appreciate the benefit of removable legs for an extra few inches of room.

And now, onto the king of curved sofas, Vladimir Kagan, who was famous for his gently rounded couches. This one dubbed the Serpentine for its curved shape, was designed in 1950 when the designer was only 23 years old. It is still his most famous legacy.

The most obvious benefit of a curved sofa is that you get a bit more surface area than a traditional sofa. They can also save space because you can push them into a corner.

Curved couches were quite popular in the 1970s when some of the most famous designer pieces became more mainstream. They haven't exactly fallen out of vogue, but they're back in a big way.

The House Beautiful shopping editors are always looking for easy and fresh ways to spruce up a living room, so when we set out to find the best curved couches on the market, we looked high and low for pieces that are as luxurious as they are cozy.
